If you plan to get acid face peels to improve your skin’s texture, erase fine lines and help with sun damage you’ve gotten over the course of your life, there are a few things you must do after the procedure. The same is true if you decide to get more chemical peels in the future to help keep your skin healthy.
Table of Contents
1. Stay Indoors or Use Sunscreen
You should use sunscreen at all times, but especially after any type of chemical peel. The skin is super sensitive to sunlight and UV rays at this time.
Be sure to choose a sun block that offers both UVA and UVB protection with an SPF of 30. Also make sure that it is gentle enough for every day use. You will need to apply it half an hour before going outdoors and every two hours for maximum protection.
Staying indoors is best for your skin after a chemical peel treatment, but if this is not possible, be sure to keep plenty of sunscreen on hand.
2. Wear a Wide-Brimmed Hat
This is something you should do often and even more so after a chemical peel. Sun screen alone is not enough protection. Going through all the trouble of a chemical peel to reverse damage that has already been done is useless if you’re not going to protect your skin now and in the future.
3. Keep Skin Clean
Only use water or a mild cleanser, preferably one like Cetaphil as it is specially formulated for dermatologists. Never use cheap or harsh soaps at this time. Using plain tap water is fine; remember to not rub your face.
Let it air dry. Chemically treated skin is already irritated from the peel. It is now starting the healing process so you want to avoid anything that would aggravate it. Your face also needs the extra moisture right now, so letting it air dry helps keep it moist.
4. Keep the Skin Moist
You should rinse you face with cool water several times each day and apply a light, but quality moisturizer. Avoid air that is too cold or going outside if the air is cold or even hot and dry. Cold air can dry your skin out just as easily as hot weather can. Try to avoid any extreme temperatures.
5. Use a Good Moisturizer
Invest in a good moisturizer that is recommended by dermatologist and use it often. Too many people skimp on using a good product for moisturizing their face. Using cheap products after a chemical peel is not the best way for you to maintain the benefits of a facial peel.
6. Keep the Skin Cool
We’ve already covered staying indoors after a chemical peel. You also want to keep your skin cool. Sweating and overheating can cause your face to burn and feel irritated. Try to avoid any exercise or other activities that will cause you to sweat. If your face feels like it is getting too hot, you can use a soft, damp cloth to place on your face for a few minutes.
Although a chemical peel is a rather easy process it does require you to take special care of your skin afterwards. Be prepared to aid your skin in the healing process by using the above recommendations. You want to give your skin the best possible care while it goes through the peeling and healing process.
Not caring for your skin properly after your acid face peels can actually cause more damage than you were trying to fix in the first place. Be kind to your skin and give it what it needs during this time of recovery.
